BACK TO FAMILIAR TERRITORY FOR RANDLE AT SANDOWN

After a nine-week break, Melbourne’s Thomas Randle is looking forward to returning to familiar territory when the Dunlop Super2 series hits Sandown raceway this weekend for round five of the 2018 championship.

So far in his rookie season, the BRDC Rising Star Randle has scored one Armor All Pole Position, a round podium finish and achieved three front-row starts after qualifying second for race one at Townsville last time out.

“It has felt like such a long break, almost to the extent that I have forgotten I am a part of this championship, but it is very refreshing to know I will be back behind the wheel of the Skye Sands Tickford Racing Falcon this weekend.

“The last time I raced at Sandown was three years ago in Formula 4 and before that it was in my father’s SAAB V8 Sports Sedan, so it is nice to be racing at another circuit I have previously been to and know well. Sandown is the closest event to my place of residence and is as good as a home race for me, while I’ll also have plenty of family and friends coming along to cheer me on. The next stop in the championship will see me heading to Mount Panorama and Newcastle, both of which will be new tracks to me.

“I have had two test days at Winton since the last round at Townsville which both ran quite smoothly, however we are racing on the grippier Super Soft Dunlop tyre this weekend, which myself and a few other drivers have never had a chance to experience, so it will be a challenging weekend for sure.

“If it rains, then that will be another new experience for me as well as I have never turned a lap in the wet in this car. Either way I will be driving as hard as I can and I’m sure the boys from Tickford Racing and I can put together a great package to challenge up at the pointy end of the field.”

This weekend's action kicks off on Friday, with two 40-minute practice sessions, followed by one 15-minute qualifying session and 22 lap race on Saturday, leaving Sunday with the same format; another 15-minute qualifying session and 22 lap race.
